WARM UP
- This weekend, we learned about meeting needs. If you could have one small, everyday problem permanently solved, what would it be?
- Additional Thought: This fun icebreaker encourages creativity and laughter. Expect responses like dishes, traffic, or remembering passwords.
- Additional Question: Why do you think we long for convenience and relief from even the small things?
- Conversation Caution: If someone shares a deeper struggle disguised as a small one, be sensitive and check in later.
- Group Dynamic Tip: Let this question warm the room and connect your group in shared everyday frustrations.
- Sometimes God calls those who are unqualified, but willing. Would you rather be overqualified but unneeded, or underqualified but chosen? Why?
- Additional Thought: This plays on the calling of the disciples, who were far from elite. It also gently invites people to reflect on deeper insecurities or pride.
- Additional Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:27 – “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise…”
- Additional Question: When in your life have you felt either overqualified or underqualified?
- What’s something from Larry’s message that caught your attention or made you think?
- Additional Question: Did anything Larry said make you see your role in God’s plan differently?
KNOW IT
This weekend, we were reminded that when we ask God to meet needs, He often calls us to be part of the answer. Read and reflect on the following verses:
Don’t feel like you need to get through all of these; maybe pick a few that interest you the most or ask a few people in the group which passages they want to dig into.
- Matthew 9:35-38 — Why do you think Jesus invites His disciples to pray first instead of acting right away?
- Additional Thought: Jesus knows that lasting compassion begins in the heart. Prayer shifts our mindset from fixers to followers.
- Additional Scripture: Luke 10:2 – “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray…”
- Additional Question: What difference does it make when you pray before acting?
- Conversation Caution: Some may feel stuck in “only prayer.” Encourage seeing prayer as preparation not passivity.
- Group Dynamic Tip: Pause as a group and pray for laborers in the Kingdom before moving on.
- Matthew 10:1-4 — What stands out to you about how Jesus prepares His disciples before sending them?
- Additional Thought: He gives authority before they prove themselves. He equips before
- Additional Scripture: Ephesians 2:10 – “…created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand…”
- Additional Question: What gifts or strengths has God given you that could be used to serve others?
- Conversation Caution: Avoid idealizing the disciples, emphasize God’s empowering grace.
- Matthew 10:5-15 — What do you think He wanted them to learn by relying on others instead of themselves?
- Additional Thought: This develops humility, dependence, and relationships. It prevents self-reliance and pride.
- Additional Scripture: Galatians 6:2 – “Bear one another’s burdens…”
- Additional Question: What makes it hard for you to rely on others when stepping into faith?
- Matthew 10:16-20 — What might it look like to trust the Holy Spirit to give you the words or courage in a difficult moment?
- Additional Thought: This is not just about persecution—it includes parenting, friendship, conversations, and moments of tension.
- Additional Scripture: Luke 12:12 – “…the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
- Additional Question: When have you had to speak or lead without knowing exactly what to say?
- Conversation Caution: Some may carry regret for what they didn’t say. Reframe this around future trust, not past failure.
- Group Dynamic Tip: Invite the group to pray over one situation where they want boldness or words from the Spirit.
SHARE IT
- The disciples weren’t special or more capable than you are today; they were just ordinary people, willing to go where Jesus sent them. Can you share a time when God used you in a way you didn’t feel qualified or ready? What happened?
- Additional Thought: This question levels the playing field. Most impactful ministry happens through “ordinary obedience.”
- Additional Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:5 – “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves… but our sufficiency is from God.”
- Additional Question: How did your faith grow through that experience?
- Conversation Caution: Some may still feel unqualified. Affirm that God’s calling rarely starts with confidence it begins with willingness.
- Larry encouraged us to “look in the mirror” when looking for someone to solve a problem. What are some reasons we don’t step in to meet needs around us, even when it’s in our power to do so?
- Additional Thought: Common blockers include fear, convenience, busyness, or waiting for someone “more qualified.”
- Additional Scripture: James 4:17 – “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
- Additional Question: What lie or barrier do you need to confront to step into action?
LIVE IT
- Sometimes strong feelings about a need can feel like action, even if we haven’t done anything. Use this diagram to help you prayerfully move from awareness to action and share with your group.
In the middle (overlap) is where your passion meets opportunity—the needs you care about and can prayerfully act on today.
- Additional Thought: This is a moment of personal alignment when what breaks your heart meets what’s in your hands.
- Additional Scripture: Micah 6:8 – “…do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.”
- Additional Question: What’s one action step you can take this week in the “middle space” of that diagram?
- Conversation Caution: Some may feel overwhelmed, remind them to start small and stay faithful.
- Group Dynamic Tip: Consider doing a “commissioning moment” at the end where each person shares one step and the group prays over them.

TIPS ON GROUP PRAYER
Prayer is an important part of being in a Life Group. Over the years, we’ve found that group prayer goes better when we follow three simple guidelines.
WE PRAY FOR ONE TOPIC AT A TIME – Anyone in the group is free to introduce a prayer request, either before prayer begins or during prayer time. Once a topic is introduced, the group focuses on that request alone. Once it’s covered, the group moves on to the next topic.
PRAY MORE THAN ONCE – Because the group is focusing on one topic at a time, each person is encouraged to pray several times during the prayer time for those topics they feel most led to pray about. No one is required to pray.
WE KEEP OUR PRAYERS SHORT AND SIMPLE – Group prayer goes better when members keep their prayers short and to the point. When someone prays for a long time, it’s hard for the other members to stay focused, and long prayers tend to intimidate those who are just learning to pray out loud in a group. No one is required to pray out loud.
- Prayer Transition and Optional Question: The #1 fear most people have is speaking in public. Group prayer would fall into this category. If you have new people in your group, going over “Tips on Group Prayer” is crucial. In most cases, it’s also a good reminder for returning group members. More than once, we’ve had people tell us they quit a Life Group or didn’t join a group because they had to pray out loud.
- Additional Question: (An important one for new groups): Prayer is an amazing avenue God has given us to communicate with Him and He with us, but we also come to it with many different thoughts and feelings. Which of the following statements is most true for you?
- Prefer to pray silently instead of out loud
- Find my mind wandering when praying
- Like to write out prayers
- Look forward to time in prayer
- Don’t really know how to pray
